"I just wanted to say 'thank you' one more time for relieving my nerve pain. You have given me new life, and there are not enough words to thank you. I have nothing but the utmost praise and confidence in your skills." -MD
Understanding Pain Management Options
As the patient, it is your decision whether or not to have spinal surgery. Taking ownership of this decision while recognizing how the limitations of your individual physical condition influences the potential success of each treatment options is important.
If you choose to have spine surgery, be mindful that your physical condition and mental attitude plays a role in your body's ability to heal. This includes having a complete understanding of the anticipated outcome, as well as a positive attitude.
Determining the pros and cons of spinal surgery includes weighing the risks and benefits involved. Since you will make the final decision, it is critical that you ask your spine surgeon questions about anything you do not understand.
Understanding Pain
Ranging from a slight nuisance to acute or chronic in nature, pain is an unpleasant feeling that lets you know that something may be wrong. It is one of the body's warning signals that indicates a problem that needs attention.
Pain starts in receptor nerve cells located beneath the skin and in organs throughout the body. When there is an illness, injury, or other type of problem, these receptor cells send messages along nerve pathways to the spinal cord, which then carries the message to the brain.
Neck Pain
Because of its location and range-of-motion, the neck is often left unprotected and subject to injury. Neck pain can result from many different causes — from injury, to age-related disorders, or inflammatory disease.
Lower Back Pain
Low back pain can range from mild, dull, annoying pain, to persistent, severe, disabling pain in the lower back. Pain in the lower back can restrict mobility and interfere with normal functioning.
