Joint Replacement and Revisions
Joint replacement surgery has been one of the most significant advances in orthopedics in the last fifty years. As arthritis affects millions of Americans, the ability to replace severely damaged joints has made it possible for most people to continue to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle. Improvements in materials, surgical techniques and implant design have made it possible to extend these benefits to many more patients, and to most of the major joints of the body. Hips, knees and shoulders are the most common ones, but wrists, elbows and finger joints can now be treated.
Revision of failed or failing joint replacements is necessary when there is infection, breakage of bone or implants, excessive wear of the plastic components, dislocation of the replaced joint, or loosening of the components. This is a specialized area of orthopedic surgery.
